5 Reasons Why Homework Is Good Or Bad — Is Homework Good Or Bad?

Arguments about assigned reading have persisted for decades. Parents and school reformers have voiced concerns about homework's effectiveness for as long as children have grumbled about having to do it. However, many educators maintain that pupils benefit most from homework assignments outside class. Educators, administrators, and researchers are giving the usefulness of homework a second look as schools transition to the new (and controversial) Common Core curriculum requirements.

If you think, Is Homework Necessary, then its answer is yes. However, homework is everything from a blank slate to understanding the scholarly literature on the topic.

5 Reasons  — Is Homework Good Or Bad?

In many ways, doing homework seems obvious. You should improve your maths or Spanish if you practice multiplication more. Why students should have Homework and also learn Spanish words. But things might be challenging.

  • One of the most well-known homework researchers in the country, Harris Cooper, Ph.D., a social psychologist at Duke University, says that homework can help students learn and remember things better. But only some students learn something. Cooper and his colleagues looked at studies that came out between 1987 and 2003 and found that homework was linked to higher test scores in high school and, to a lesser extent, in middle school. But they found little evidence that elementary school homework helps students learn (Review of Educational Research, 2006).

  • Still, test scores aren't the only thing that matters. People who like homework also say it can help kids learn things outside school, like being responsible, studying well, and managing their time. But when it comes to hard proof of these benefits, Mollie Galloway, Ph.D., an associate professor of educational leadership at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, says, "the jury is still out." Teachers give a lot of homework because they think it helps students learn good study skills and habits. We don't know that for sure, though." • Even if homework helps, too much of a good thing can be bad. Cooper says, "There's only so much that kids can learn from home study." He agrees with the rule of thumb that students shouldn't do more than 10 minutes of homework a night per grade level, from about 10 minutes in first grade to a maximum of about two hours in high school. This limit is supported by both the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association.

  • Doing too much homework can be bad for you. Cooper says that kids don't learn much helpful information after that age. Researchers have pointed out problems, such as getting bored or tired of schoolwork, having less time for family and extracurricular activities, not getting enough sleep, and feeling more stressed.
