GCSE grading

In Northern Ireland, qualifications are governed by the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA).

The grading for all CCEA GCSE credentials changed in the summer of 2019. There is now a C* grade, meaning fewer students will get an A*.

For GCSE qualifications, other examining organisations, including AQA, OCR, Pearson, or Eduqas, employ a number-graded framework, with nine being the highest grade and one being the lowest.

Your GCSE results may include both letters and numbers, depending on the examining body you are using, therefore it's critical to comprehend how these marks differ.

Applied GCSEs

The purpose of applied GCSEs is to encourage you to apply your knowledge and understanding of a subject in a practical setting. They are about the same size as two conventional GCSEs.

While the work you produce will have a more practical emphasis, these GCSEs are assessed to the same standard as the more academic GCSEs. You will conduct your own research and frequently create a body of work.

These GCSEs can lead to career options that are comparable to those of conventional GCSEs.

Short course GCSEs

Short course You will have more alternatives for what and how you study thanks to GCSEs. They are comparable to a portion of a full GCSE, but the requirements are the same. They can be completed in around three terms, or half the time. If you study more slowly than most people, however, you can spread out a short course over the same period of time as a conventional GCSE.

Additionally, shorter courses let more gifted individuals pursue additional classes, like a second language. They can also be a good choice if your class or college schedule prohibits you from taking a complete set of GCSEs.

Although these can lead to similar pathways as regular GCSEs, if you want to pursue.

If your exams don't go well

Your school or FE college can request a recount or re-mark of your exam if you believe there may have been an error in the marking process. The awarding organisation, along with the independent Examinations Appeals Board, if necessary, administers the appeals process.

You can decide to retake specific units if your GCSE is made up of them. Per unit, only one retake is permitted. Your many tries will be combined to determine the highest score.
